Healthy Moms, Happy Families

When I became a mama, I was instantaneously changed by my new little best friend who loved and trusted me implicitly.  With that change came the innate longing to always put her needs ahead of mine, to ensure the very best for her emotionally, nutritionally, and developmentally.

Fast forward a year and a half… Sometimes that innate longing for putting my daughter’s needs ahead of mine leaves me frizzy haired, wearing yoga pants as real clothing, and eating the crumby leftovers of her painstakingly created worldly lunch showcasing a variety of organic nibbles.  Let’s face it- Mama’s got needs too that go beyond squeezing in a run before facilitating sensory play!

It was this notion of needing a healthy, quick outlet for focusing on mama during the day that Bump Club and Beyond, the social event company for moms and moms-to-be that I blog for regularly, had in mind when they sat down with the fabulous Health Starts Here crew at Whole Foods Market in hopes of creating an event series focused on creating healthier families starting with mom in mind.

“Healthy Moms, Happy Families” is a series hosted by Bump Club and Beyond the first and third Tuesday of every month at 1 pm in the bulk department of Whole Foods Market downtown.  Vanessa Vaughan, WFM Healthy Cooking Coach and BCB’s Resident Healthy Living Guru, leads this complimentary series for moms covering everything from how to shop the bulk department to how to make homemade sushi rolls using the season’s freshest produce.

Vanessa focuses on nutrient dense foods using easy recipes that are perfect for busy moms to need meals that pack a nutritional punch when they get a chance to eat.  While many of the foods are very baby/toddler friendly- especially for the little gourmands we’re all raising today- the series truly focuses on moms.  You’ve gotta love that!

The series in informal and encourages fellowship with the other moms and moms-to-be in attendance- and with Vanessa with is a nutritional cooking gold mine!  Baby N and I like to meet friends for lunch before hand in on the mezzanine, enjoy the series, and then use our new knowledge about a quick healthy ingredient or recipe to do an inspired shopping trip.

Even better?   Vanessa will help you with recipes, shopping tips, and nutritional inspiration after class- as a WFM that is part of the complimentary service she provides to clients.

I leave after each event with several new recipes in my arsenal and enough quick culinary inspiration to sustain me to the next event.  Thankfully- because leftover butternut squash mac ‘n cheese isn’t enough to sustain me through the day!
