Rallying at Reimers Ranch

We had our trip to Hamilton Pool all planned.  We’d get out there bright and early, before hoards descended, and enjoy a relaxing morning at the idyllic swimming hole.  We even made it out the door before our planned time of 9:30 a.m. (that almost never happens).

Imagine our surprise when we rolled up to the park at 10 a.m. and were told that they were at capacity, and that there was a two-hour wait. What??

Well, that wasn’t going to happen, even if we didn’t have a 2 year-old in the car with us.

As we were turning the car around to get out of line, one of the park rangers suggested we try Reimers Ranch. We’d noticed a sign for it on the way in, and decided to try and salvage the outing and give it a shot. We were prepared to be disappointed, (How could it be as good as Hamilton Pool?) but ended up really enjoying ourselves.

In addition to being great for swimming, The Travis County Park is apparently viewed by the Central-Texas rock-climbing community as a destination with world class rock climbing.”, has miles of mountain-biking trails, and draws anglers in search of White Bass.

Though it was completely different from Hamilton Pool, we liked the laid-back vibe.  The stretch of beach alongside the Pedernales River has that sparse, rugged, Hill-Country beauty that I have come to love in the 8 years I have been in Austin.

There’s no shade to speak of near the water, but we were fine as we just sat in the water as our daughter splashed in the shallows and amused herself by playing in the sand.  We did see that a few groups had brought beach umbrellas and sun canopies to provide respite from the sun.

The majority of people chilled out in the water, talking, climbing the rocks on the opposite bank, or floating lazily on their rafts.

We were there from around 10:30-12:30 and it never got too busy.

My husband and daughter played in the water….

…while I took photos.

I recommend and we’ll definitely be making a return trip!
